Dear
United States History Student and Parent or Guardian:
As
we continue to roll forward in the school year, we want to thank the students
for their work and bring that to the attention of their parents or
guardians. Additionally, we wanted to
make you aware of a project that students will be asked to complete and present
during the fourth quarter. By giving
everyone adequate time, some or all of the requirements may be completed by
using the holiday break.
The
project is to complete a minimum of two hours of community service for an
organization based in the local communities or county. Once it is complete, the students will be
asked to give a presentation on how this service project helped the
organization meet its mission to the community and what the student learned
about participating as an active community member.
The
students may complete this project in a variety of ways. Listed below are a few ideas:
1. In a service based
organization that works within DeKalb County such as FFA.
2. In their local faith based
youth group that plan service work during the holiday season.
3. In an organization such as
Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts which has an upcoming service project.
4. Students may work
individually or in small groups to assist an organization in the
community. Some examples from the past
are participation in Bowl for Kids Sake, volunteer work clean up work for
various organizations, or serving dinners.
We
are open to any idea that will help the students gain an appreciation of being
an active member in the community. The
only restrictions are we do not want the activities to be fundraisers for
another school organization or baby-sitting for families. While both of these are worthwhile
activities, it is my goal to help the students see the value in community-based
service.
We
hope this turns out to be a rewarding and worthwhile experience for everyone
involved. If the students need letters
of introduction to community leaders for the project, we will be happy to
provide them. If there are questions,
please feel free to contact Mr. Farnsworth, whose students have completed this
assignment in prior years, in person by phone or at dfarnswo@kidsroe.org. Thank you for your time and attention to this
matter.
Sincerely,
Duane
